Vegas will face off against Minnesota on Friday night for the final time in a regular season. Vegas needs 1 point to clinch a playoff spot. Minnesota has been losing game after game, and has dropped out of the final wildcard spot. They now are depending on the Yotes and Avs to lose games while they are 4 points back for the final wildcard spot. The Wild will be hungry for a win and Minnesota has shown nothing but dominance when facing Vegas. The Wild have a record 4-0-1 against Vegas and they are the first team to sweep Vegas in a regular season series. To rub it in Vegas fans faces even more, the Wild have the only player that was raised in Vegas that plays in the NHL, Jason Zucker.
Vegas only has one win against the Wild, and they have never beat Wild in the Fortress. The Vegas Golden Knights have never scored more than 2 goals in a game against Minnesota and Minnesota has never not won a game against Vegas scoring less than 4. The Wild have out scored the Knights 18-9. Needless to say, but we're gonna say it anyway; this has been a very lopsided match up since game one for Vegas. They have been very evenly matched up throughout most of the game stats but the Wild have been great with blocking shots against Vegas with 19 or 18 in every game except one game (14 in that one game) making it very hard for the Knights to score goals.
With something like blocked shots being one of the X-factors that has helped the Wild push past the Knights, this is not good news. Over the last 3 games the Knights have had a total of 51 of their shots blocked. On average that is 17 wasted shots per game. The Knights are going to have to break the trend of letting the puck fly with a defender in possession and get quality shoots. Dubnyk has has been a wall in net while facing the Knights. He is 1-3 in his last 4 games and I would expect him to be in net Friday night with his last game being Monday against the Preds.
Malcolm Subban has had some impressive play at home as a Golden Knight with a 13-1-1 record over the last 2 seasons. This year,he is 5-0-1 with a .919 save percentage with his first OT loss at home coming from an under whelming Detroit team. His overall record on the road this season 2-9 so, is it safe to say Subban needs to be at home to win game? Sure, if we take a deeper look into Subban; he has never registered two points for the Knights without the Knights scoring 3 or more goals. This can present a problem for the Knights going against a team that doesn't let up goals easily. A good thing for the Knights is Minnesota in the month of March are 4-9 and has only put up 3 or more goals in 4 games this month.
I can't help by think kryptonite when I hear the Wild and Malcolm Subban mentioned in the same game. It takes me back to Subban's 2nd game in the NHL when he faced the Wild as a Boston Bruin. He was ran out of the game just over the halfway mark of the 2nd. The Wild scored 3 goals. Last season for the Knights, Subban played in 2 of the 3 games against the Wild. The Wild would pile up 4 in the first meet and 5 in the second. His overall save percentage against the Wild is a horrible .878. Subban and company against the Wild have have been out scored 12-4 in 2.5 games. Subban has not won a game in his short history in the NHL without his team performing around him. One team may get back on track tonight and if it is going to be the Knights, the skaters are are going to have to put in a full 60 and shoot with clear lanes to the net.
